How did you get started in calligraphy?
In the world of crafting, some find their niche early on, while others explore various avenues. For this calligraphy enthusiast, the journey began with an insatiable love for crafting. From beading to cross-stitch, painting to knitting, there wasn’t a creative realm left untouched. The pandemic, however, became the catalyst for a new artistic adventure. A free-hand lettering course captured my heart, and with a pen in hand, the journey into the wonderous world of calligraphy began. Thanks to unwavering support from my loved ones, my husband who has always been my champion in everything I pursue and an unrelenting passion for the craft– what started as a pandemic pastime has blossomed into an artistic passion that shows no signs of waning.
Reflecting on the past year’s artistic escapades helps me understand the threads that weave my artistic identity, leading to a richer, more nuanced expression.
As we step into the new year, could you share what or who has left a lasting impact on your creative expression?
In the ever-evolving landscape of artistic expression, inspiration, for me, often comes from unexpected sources. For me, vintage European elements have played a pivotal role, as of late. The rich tapestry of architecture, color palettes, textures, and patterns found in the historical backdrop have become a fountain of creativity. Whether it’s a stroll through a bustling city, the pages of a forgotten book, the laughter of a dear friend, identifying these treasured nuggets of inspiration unveils the magic in the mundane. Taking a step back from the modern technological world, there’s a deep appreciation for the personal – a sentiment particularly cherished when crafting wedding invitations. It’s about more than just aesthetics; it’s about creating an experience, a moment that transcends the digital realm.
Artistic growth is a continuous journey, marked by subtle shifts and transformative moments. Recognizing the evolution of my craft allows me to appreciate the progress made and helps set the stage for intentional growth in the year ahead.
Are there historical or cultural calligraphy styles that have played a significant role in shaping your artistic identity?
Delving into the nuances of calligraphy, I draw inspiration from historical and cultural styles. The journey involves more than skill acquisition; it’s about understanding the roots that ground the art form. There’s a recognition that calligraphy isn’t merely a craft; it’s a living, breathing tradition shaped by centuries of cultural influence.
In the rich tapestry of calligraphy’s historical and cultural significance, there is an exhilarating sense of being part of a tradition that spans CENTURIES. As a modern calligrapher, I find myself intertwined with a legacy of artistic expression that has weathered the tests of time. However, what makes this journey even more enchanting is the transformative role of modern technology. In an era where screens illuminate our lives, the accessibility of online courses and digital resources has transformed the art of calligraphy. The evolution from quills to digital pens has not only preserved the essence of an ancient craft, but has also opened its doors wide, allowing enthusiasts like myself to immerse in the beauty of calligraphy with unprecedented ease. This fusion of tradition and technology has created a dynamic landscape where the whispers of history harmonize with the hum of innovation, making the art of calligraphy tantalizingly accessible to all who wish to dip their pens into its proverbial ink.
Delving into the creative process, how do you approach the blank canvas when starting a new design?
For me, every design is a canvas waiting to tell a unique story. Grounded in the couple’s vision, the color palette, and the overall aesthetic– the creative process unfolds pretty organically. Whether aiming for a classic/timeless vibe or a whimsical/trendy feel, every detail; no matter how small, contributes to the narrative. It’s not just about crafting invitations or day-of details; it’s about curating an experience that resonates with the couple’s essence.
“Intentionality breathes life into creativity. By reflecting on how I can infuse more purpose and mindfulness into my artistic endeavors, I lay the foundation for a year of purposeful creation.“
For those embarking on a calligraphy journey in the coming year, what valuable lessons or advice would you offer to help them improve their skills?
In the world of calligraphy, patience is not just a virtue; it’s a prerequisite. The advice is simple yet profound – master the basic strokes, take your time, and be patient. Only after mastering these foundational elements can one embark on the journey of creating their own unique style. Calligraphy is an art form that rewards dedication and persistence, offering a canvas for personal expression.
Delving into the lessons learned from overcoming these obstacles will strengthen not only your artistic prowess but also the resilience that fuels your creative spirit.
Creativity thrives in collaboration. Whether collaborating with clients or fellow artists (think photographers, wedding planners, musicians, florists, and more) understanding the dynamics of shared creativity adds layers to my artistic journey. Always ask yourself– What lessons can I carry forward from these collaborative dances?
Amidst the hustle and chaos of deadlines and projects, it is CRUCIAL to pause and take time for self-care. Reflecting on whether I prioritized self-care and allowed space for creative rejuvenation prompts me to create more of a balance that sustains both my passion and well-being. A natural “YES woman” and born “go-getter” myself, this area is one I believe I will always be striving to better myself in.
This year’s “stats”:
In a whirlwind of creativity, my year has been nothing short of extraordinary. From crafting 115 day-of details to designing 11 invitation suites, it is incredible to think that my art has touched the lives of 28 couples this year alone. Five styled shoots, logo designs, a company rebrand (a LBS first!) and even 4 large signage installs add layers to this year’s narrative. However, one of the most heartwarming moments of 2023 is a returning bride entrusting me with her baby shower invitations – a testament to the enduring impact of personalized art.
In the symphony of strokes and the dance of ink, I feel as if I have curated moments, etched memories, and woven tales through my creations. From a humble crafting background to becoming one with pen and ink– I can’t believe how far this passion for art and all things creative has pushed me.
As I continue on this journey of reflection and anticipation, I invite fellow creatives to join me in weaving together a quilt of questions that will guide us through the artistic landscapes of 2024. Let us celebrate the past, embrace the present and eagerly unwrap the gift of possibility that the new year holds.
Here’s to a year of inspiration, growth and boundless creative exploration! 🎨✨

Let me first tell you how happy I am that you’re here. I have many passions and I am grateful to be able to bring many of them into my daily life. I have always been creative, but never knew what my niche was until I met calligraphy. When I am not at my desk creating, I work as a Bilingual Resource Teacher in an elementary school (my second language is Spanish!). I also love spending quality time with my people, reading, cooking, exercising, or enjoying the outdoors.
